Definition

Develops networks and uses them to strengthen internal and external organizational support.  Identifying opportunities and taking action to build strategic relationships between one’s area and other areas, teams, departments, units, or organizations to help achieve business goals.

Proficiency Level 5
  • Strategically expands networks

  • Builds networks with parties that can enable the achievement of the organization’s strategy.

  • Brings informal teams of experts together to address issues/needs, share information and resolve differences, as required.

  • Seeks opportunities to partner and transfer knowledge (e.g., by actively participating in trade shows, conferences, meetings, committees, multi-stakeholder groups and/or seminars).

  • Cultivates personal networks in different parts of the organization and effectively uses contacts to achieve results.

  • Creates and facilitates forums to develop new alliances and formal networks.

  • Identifies areas to build strategic relationships.

  • Contacts senior officials to identify potential areas of mutual, long-term interest.

  • Creates networking opportunities.

  • Creates highly effective, mutually beneficial relationships with direct reports, peers, and management to achieve organization objectives; others within the organization view this manager as an important member of the management team.

Proficiency Level 1
  • Rarely goes outside of the work unit or organization to coordinate activities with others.

  • Infrequently or poorly communicates with other areas or departments.
  • Focuses on own internal function rather than looking at the interfaces that surround the function.
  • Often does not follow through on commitments to other areas or units.
  • Does little to maintain or strengthen existing work relationships with subordinates, peers, or management.
  • Does not look for or recognize opportunities to develop relationships within or outside the organization.
